Diagnostic Procedure

Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) Test

A non-invasive test comparing blood pressure in the ankle and arm to check for peripheral artery disease.

The ankle-brachial index (ABI) test is a simple, non-invasive screening tool used to check for peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD is a condition in which the arteries in the legs become narrowed or blocked by plaque, reducing blood flow to the lower extremities. Left untreated, PAD increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, and limb complications.

During the test, a blood pressure cuff is placed on your arm and your ankle. The blood pressure readings are compared to calculate a ratio called the ankle-brachial index. A lower-than-normal ratio suggests that blood flow to your legs is reduced, which may indicate the presence of PAD. The entire test takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes and involves no needles or discomfort.

Your provider may recommend an ABI test if you experience leg pain or cramping during walking, have numbness or weakness in your legs, have wounds on your feet or legs that heal slowly, or have risk factors for PAD such as smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of cardiovascular disease.

At Garden State Medical Group, we perform ABI testing in-house at our North Bergen and Secaucus offices. Results are available immediately, and your provider will review them with you during your visit to discuss any necessary follow-up care or treatment. Call (201) 453-2800 to schedule your screening.
