Diagnostic Procedure
EKG / Electrocardiogram
A quick, painless test that records the electrical activity of your heart to detect irregularities, arrhythmias, and signs of heart disease.
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a quick, painless test that records the electrical activity of your heart. It is one of the simplest and fastest tests used to evaluate heart health, and it is often one of the first tests performed when a heart condition is suspected. At Garden State Medical Group, we offer in-house EKGs at both of our office locations.
During the test, small electrode patches are placed on your chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes detect the electrical signals produced by your heart as it beats and transmit them to a machine that records the pattern on paper or a screen. The entire procedure takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes and involves no discomfort.
An EKG can detect a variety of heart conditions including arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), tachycardia (fast heart rate), bradycardia (slow heart rate), heart attack (current or previous), enlarged heart chambers, electrolyte imbalances affecting the heart, and the effects of certain medications on heart function.
Your provider may recommend an EKG as part of a routine physical exam, before surgery, if you are experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, or shortness of breath, or if you have risk factors for heart disease. Results are available immediately, and your provider will review them with you during your visit.
If your EKG shows abnormalities, additional testing such as an echocardiogram, Holter monitor, or stress test may be recommended. Garden State Medical Group provides all of these services in-house for your convenience. Call (201) 453-2800 to schedule your appointment.
